DTI Caraga warns vs mislabeled

BUTUAN CITY - As school opening is fast approaching, the Region 13 (Caraga Region) office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI 13) here Friday mobilized all its city and provincial field personnel to closely watch school suppliers who take advantage on the prices of school supplies during the opening season.

As this developed, the DTI 13 also warned parents to be more meticulous of mislabeled school supplies/materials to assure quality and durability. The DTI official also warned parents not to rush into buying fake or imitation products that are cheap. "Our parents and even our students must help in checking for labels such as the brand or trade mark and name," he said.

"Our parents must know the product and address of manufacturer, country of manufacture, net quantity and toxicity warning, if applicable," Pagaran added.

"Our parents and even students must immediately report to the nearest DTI offices of any suspicious item, so that action must be immediately served," Pagaran said.

"Those found not conforming to the minimum labeling requirements face administrative or even criminal charges which include a maximum fine of P300,000 per violation," Pagaran warned.

Under the Consumer Act of the Philippines, the manufacturers, importers, distributors, and retailers are liable to consumers for injuries caused by defective and unsafe products as well as for the insufficient or inadequate information on the use of certain products and the hazards they pose.

The DTI Caraga has already activated its provincial and city task forces to check various malls and school supply stores.
