AN INTOXICATED man struck fear into shop staff - waving a cosh at them and hurling racial abuse after they refused to sell him more alcohol.

chanel watch Alan Leggett, 31, of Raithby Grove, who stole vodka from the Somerfield store in Laceby Road, was later caught growing cannabis at his home when police arrived to arrest him.

Grimsby Crown Court heard Leggett admitted causing an affray and theft on March 31 and possessing an "amateurish" cannabis crop, which he claimed he was asked to grow for a friend.

Andrew Wilson, prosecuting, said the affray happened after Leggett, who was intoxicated, walked into the store at about 9pm.

He tried to buy a crate of lager, but was refused because of his state. This led to an argument, and security guard Prince Omon intervened.

Mr Wilson said Leggett hurled racial abuse at Mr Omon.

When told the police were on their way, "the defendant stated he didn't care," Mr Wilson chanel watch said. "Another security guard had to intervene."

He said Leggett produced a metal cosh. He said: "Staff scattered to the back of the staff room - all except the young lady who refused him service.

"She was caught behind the counter. He was walking towards her. As he passed some bottles he remembered his purpose, picked up some vodka and left."

When police visited his address, they discovered 25 cannabis plants, eight bags of herbal cannabis and drug parapher nalia.

Mr Wilson said it was "not a successful harvest" and would have made less in street value than Leggett's estimate of Pounds 150 to Pounds 300.

Matthew Hackfath, mitigating, said Leggett, who had entered an early guilty plea to the offence, could not remember much of the incident as he was drunk and had taken some non-prescribed valium.

He possessed a cosh for his own protection and was sorry if he used racial words.

Mr Hackfath said Leggett, a regular cannabis user at the time, planned to keep half of the cannabis for himself and half for his friend.

Recorder Carl Gumsley, acknowledging Leggett's attempts to go on courses for thinking skills and substance abuse, sentenced him to 15 months' imprisonment.
