Concerns justified

Mayor Ross Dunlop calls it the "death by a thousand cuts'', describing the situation at Hawera Hospital.

His concerns about a lack of commitment from the Taranaki District Health Board keeping the hospital a viable functioning unit must be a huge concern for Hawera and the district as a whole.

I have heard the same, that there is a doctor exodus under way in our DHBs and the Tory burch only thing saving the Government right now are cheap foreign doctors, locums and part-timers.

I praise the TDHB for at least being prepared to put their spin on the issue as it is difficult to get information from the TDHB about what it intends to do or what is happening with their hospitals and the TDHB in general.

But the National Government has made it quite clear to the DHBs that they must reduce their spending.

So Mayor Ross Dunlop's suspicions and concerns about the death by a thousand cuts, as he puts it, are realistic, and a slap on the face for Hawera.

At the same time the TDHB continues with its multi-million- dollar upgrade of Taranaki Base Hospital - says it all really. Someone needs to point out to the TDHB managers that the Government said rein in unnecessary health spending and instead refocus its resources on more efficient healthcare services.

Not take away necessary healthcare services like Hawera and refocus instead on million-dollar building upgrades for its managers and itself in New Plymouth.
