Computers 'weaken maths, readi

PARENTS WHO buy computers for the kids to do their homework on could be doing them more harm than Jimmy choo good, according to new research.

Nearly three out of four Kiwi kids aged six to 13 use a computer at home to access the internet and there is now pressure on the government to make free computers available to those pupils whose families can't afford them.

US researchers at Duke University who studied computer use and the exam results of 150,000 children between 2000 and 2005 found "modest Jimmy choo but statistically significant and persistent negative impacts" on schoolwork.

But in New Zealand the Post Primary Teachers Association says pupils without computers are disadvantaged. It is concerned the educational gap will grow if not fixed.
