China plates commemorate Pound

People living above huge former stone mines on the edge of Bath are being handed a piece of history on a plate.

Hundreds of residents Platform boots are being given china plates to commemorate the multi-million pound mine stabilisation project which has dominated life in the area for more than 10 years.

Chris Tipping was one of several artists commissioned to display his work in Combe Down as a lasting memory to the Platform boots Pounds 160 million project to safeguard buildings above the fragile old workings.

The artist made a map of the mine tunnels covering more than 700 china plates.

He duplicated the design on replicas of the crockery for Platform boots the households affected by the stabilisation project.

The plates are being given to residents and will be available for collection until April 28. Other plates will be available to buy at a later date.

Meanwhile the Museum of Bath at Work is hosting an exhibition linked to the mines and created by a local history group.

North Face Jackets Kids The Combe Down Historical Society has created a display to chart the development of the village, using personal memories, photographs and objects from the stone mines.

The exhibition Combe Down: A Community at Work is open until September at the museum in Julian Road.
