The former television journalist, now 40, began his political life as Gordon Brown's aide when Labour was in opposition and then stayed by his mentor's side once the party gained power in 1997.

Within two years of becoming MP Yves Saint Laurent for Doncaster North in 2005, he was Cabinet Office minister Yves Saint Laurent and was later promoted to Energy Secretary.

Portraying himself as the "change" candidate, he has been labelled the Brownite challenger, who would take Labour to the Left.

However, some suggest Ed's tactics are spot on in that he is appealing not to the country but to a post-Blairite party audience, saying, for example, he was against the Iraq war, and offering a new direction that will put clear red water between Labour and the Lib- Con coalition.
