Attempted murder inquiry launc

A MAN suffered a collapsed lung when he was stabbed in the back during an incident at a house in Torquay.

The 32-year-old had to be given first aid in the street by both local residents and ambulances crews after the incident in Alexandra Road, Ellacombe, on Tuesday evening.

Police in the Bay said an attempted murder investigation had now been launched.

Several residents said they heard the "groans and moans of a man in distress" just before 9pm and came out of their homes to see police and ambulance at the scene.

A 26-year-old woman believed to live locally, and to be known to the victim, has been arrested in connection with the incident and is being interviewed by Torquay police.

A police spokesman confirmed that the woman had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, but more information needed to be gathered before any decision was taken on the case.

He said: "It could be a domestic incident. All we can say is that a man received a stab wound to his back and had a collapsed lung as a result."

An ambulance service spokesman said one ambulance and a rapid response vehicle were called to the scene at 8.53pm on Tuesday.

He said: "We were called to reports of a man with back injuries and worked on him for 20 minutes, trying to stabilise Fake Movado him at the scene, before he was taken by ambulance to Torbay Hospital."

At noon yesterday, the stab victim was said to be conscious and stable in hospital.

Police returned to the scene yesterday and recovered for forensic investigation a green Mitsubishi Colt Spacestar that is understood to belong to the victim.

One officer was also seen taking away a black-handled knife that was recovered from the house where the incident happened.

A neighbour who did not want to be named said she tried to administer first aid on the man after finding him collapsed in Alexandra Road.

She said: "This man was lying there in the road. He had been stabbed.

"I just gave him first aid, and then the ambulance arrived.

"I don't really know who he is or what happened."

Another neighbour said she only became aware of an incident when she saw all the police lights outside.

But one said: "I heard some groans and moans. It was about 9pm. It sounded like a man in distress or pain.

"I told my husband, who came out and saw several people gathered around this man."
